Does Mr Bingo Work for Free?

While I wouldn't have put it quite so er... eloquently.... he's right. Does Mr Bingo Work For Free? No. And neither should you. Discuss.

Image of course by the rather spectacular Mr Bingo.

I love this.
It's the way we all feel about working for free and our talents being 'used and abused'.
There's part of me that feels that this is the way it works now and you just have to get on with it.
But I really don't like the situation and sometimes you get very little back from the amount of work you put in.

Harrietalicefox - Definitely. It's something I feel really strongly about; even when people say that 'only have a tiny budget' so aren't willing to pay for what something's worth - they don't realise they are getting bespoke artwork.

I think it stems from the idea that all artists/designers love their work/do it as a hobby, so they are happy to work for free as they are doing what they love and that is enough reward. No! This is a job, it is a business, and businesses should be profitable. People seem so embarressed and apologetic about making money from art - as if it's something to be discouraged. It's sickening. People in 'normal' jobs make money not to just pay the bills but also to buy clothes with/go out/have a life - it's almost like we are not allowed to make a profit; 'how dare you spend your hard earned commission money on frivolous things like clothes'.

This industry is in die straits and unfortunately, us illustrators are not helping ourselves and each other; working for free, undercutting each other, taking bad jobs in the hope of future money or exposure - it has to stop.

- Temp secretary & dkmart - glad you liked it! Made me chuckle too.
